Relays are an electromagnetic switch. They are components that allow isolation between a control voltage that is usually low in both voltage and current and an output voltage that is usually much higher.
They commonly fail after time due to contact wear. They may even sound as if they are still working, but high resistance can build up due to pitting or corrosion on the contact faces.
